John Adams a solo game developer.
Tell me about yourself?
My name is John Adams, I’m a solo game developer (programmer mainly). I’m originally from the UK but now living in the Philippines.
Tell me about your work experience?
Well, I’ve been self-unemployed as a game developer since my early twenties, I’m now approaching 40. I’ve been using Unity and Blender to make my games for about 10 years now.
At what age did you start doing work and developed a love for artwork? How did you develop a fondness for artwork?
I’ve always loved creating games. I started learning how to code games on my Commodore 64 as a child. I always found it more fun to come up with my game ideas, stories, and characters than playing other video games.
Did you study artwork? If yes then from where? From where did you learn this?
I guess so. I took art for my GCSEs (high school) and then moved on to A-level art in the UK. My focus at that time was mostly on programming tho, which was self-taught in my free time.
Why did you choose art as a profession?
Honestly, I don’t think I’d be happy doing anything else.
Who are your biggest influences?
Well, I like many different types of games and many types of art and music, etc. My favorite game franchises are Final Fantasy and Resident Evil, and my favorite indie games are Limbo and Cave Story.
How do you become successful?
Success doesn’t come overnight. Many years of hard work, determination, and a bit of luck should hopefully make one a successful artist.
What makes you good and different from others?
Sometimes I feel different because I like to try so many different things. I’ve worked on many different projects and tried different art styles and game genres. I’m still trying to figure out my own ‘style’ and I do strive to improve with each project I work on.
What Does Your Art Represent? What Does Your Art Mean to You?
Well, since I’m a solo developer, I have the freedom to choose what projects I want to work on. I guess as long as I’m creating games and artwork, I feel happy and free.
