Tell me about yourself?
My name is Nuno Martins, and I’m from Portugal. I am married and have 2 children. One of them is Sofia, who is the artist and storyteller of this game – Sofia and the Barbarian. We decided to develop this project precisely to bring to life the drawings Sofia made at the age of 5 and show the story she developed interactively. In addition to the story and drawings, the game’s sounds and voices were also created by my daughter.
Tell me about your work experience?
I’m an Informatics engineer, I’m a teacher in a high school Multimedia course.
At what age did you start doing work and developed a love for artwork?
I started to develop this game 3 years years ago.
How did you develop a fondness for artwork?
Like all the children I liked to draw. I guess it was as a child. By using drawings of my daughter that were not created to be used in a game, it was necessary to adjust them digitally in an image editing software to create the characters, the animations, the objects and the scenarios, turning this into a very challenging process.
Did you study artwork? If yes then from where?
From where did you learn this?
Self-taught, but with a base in my Computer Science and engineering course.
Why did you choose art as a profession?
I guess my profession is not Art. But what I’m trying to do with game develop yes, it might be art. I love it! Undoubtedly, this kind of interaction between father and daughter is very motivating, as we are developing a product together, not only for consumption at home but to spread to the world her imagination interpreted by me.
Who are your biggest influences?
My children. It is very nice to watch my daughter’s reaction when her drawings come to life in the game. It will also be very interesting in a few years she will “look back” and not only see her drawings, but she will be able to have a game based on her art.
What makes you good and different from others?
I guess it´s because I’m not developing the art myself, but working with my daughter. I can currently state that developing a game based on the creative skills of a child is a real challenge, but it is undoubtedly a very interesting project that certainly develops working skills and collaboration between father and daughter.
What does your art represent and does art mean to you?
One of the factors that make this game special, in my perspective, is that all of the illustrations are created based on drawings by a 5- year- old child, who is my daughter Sofia Martins and creates a childish but genuine atmosphere.
