Robert Megill Success Story
Robert Megill is an artist.
Tell me about yourself?
I’m Rob! Right now I live in Tokyo, Japan. I’ve been here almost three years. I’m originally from a small town outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before moving to Japan I worked for the largest home remodeler at the national headquarters. For fun, I play guitar, sing, travel, and play video games of course.
Tell me about your work experience?
Currently, I’m teaching English to business professionals and A-list clients so I’m sworn to secrecy about my students.
At what age did you start doing work and develop a love for artwork?
I started drawing as soon as I could pick up a pencil. My earliest memories are drawing SpongeBob, Mario and dinosaurs (specifically T-Rex’s haha).
How did you develop a fondness for artwork?
I always dreamed of being a cartoonist from a young age. Cartoons and animation always had a soft spot in my heart. Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were regular channels in my house in the ’90s as a kid.
Did you study artwork? If yes then from where?
I’m completely self-taught. Aside from the “how to draw cartoons” book my Dad bought me when I was about seven. Everything I draw is freehand!
From where did you learn this?
I guess I’m lucky to be able to draw freehand without any kind of assistance from light pads or tracing. My technique is to pull up the picture for reference on my iPad and then look down at my sketch pad and start drawing and using my imagination.
Why did you choose art as a profession?
Currently, my art career is strictly a hobby. My dream has always been and still is to work in animation in some capacity. I’m lucky to get my voice out here on game1news so I hope my art catches some attention! I’m completely open to doing this full time.
Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences would have to be Disney, Butch Hartman and Joe Murray to name just a few.
How do you become a successful artist?
Practice, practice and then take a break (get a snack) and practice some more. It’s all about commitment. Most importantly you have to enjoy it. If you don’t have a passion to do it every day then it may not be the right path or hobby for you.
What makes you good and different from others?
My main appeal is nostalgia and satisfying looking drawings. I’d say my accuracy in portraying my character drawings is pretty close to the original. I think right now my target audience is people who want a dose of nostalgia from their childhood. You get a good warm feeling when you see my art.
What does your art represent and does art mean to you?
My art represents my childhood and the feelings of no responsibilities on a Saturday morning.
